Producer

The ‘Beyond the Medal’ film project began in March of 2000.

Inspired by the creation of the ‘Home of Heroes’ Medal of Honor bronze cast monument in Pueblo, Colorado, Peter C. Lemon, a Medal of Honor Recipient and Director/Producer Brad Padula shared a vision to create a documentary film to chronicle the four heroes being immortalized in bronze statues. The inspirational stories of these four American heroes pushed Padula’s production company Capture It Productions, in association with Lemon, to forge ahead and produce the Beyond the Medal of Honor film and educational program. They traveled throughout the country conducting interviews with key individuals, acquired photographs and stock footage, engaging in extensive research and writing. The team archived the physical and digital elements, which provided the elements for hundreds of hours in post-production.
In the beginning, the objective was to create a four-hour program with a segment feature on each recipient. The vision for the program grew with hopes that it be broadcast to a national audience. That goal was reached when officials from the National Public Broadcast System embraced the project. While the interviews and footage were being pieced together it became obvious the producers were well into the development of a valuable teaching tool. Sights were set on a complete teachers curriculum to compliment the historical film. The educational direction required countless hours in the scripting phase to identify the most compelling elements of each respective story and creatively incorporate them into the program. External input was sought from focus groups and select industry professionals. The overall response was overwhelmingly positive and that valuable input was vital in producing the program.

In spite of the tremendous costs in time and equipment Capture It Productions remained focused on the completion of the project.. Their dedication and commitment to telling the stories factually without embellishment help to propel the project to a status now recognized as a valuable, high quality educational documentary and curriculum.

As the film neared completion, the production team pursued an underwriter to deliver this extraordinary project to PBS viewers and the millions of high school students across the nation. In the summer of 2004, H. Ross Perot came forward and offered to fund the entire project through his non-profit organization the Perot Foundation. Mr. Perot, who is a staunch supporter of the America military saw the importance of the film’s vision and from day one was 100% behind the effort to share these incredible stories with millions and millions of people.

Beyond the Medal of Honor was produced by Capture It Productions. The award winning company has been in business in Colorado since 1987 and is regarded as a premier production company in the area. The documentary team is comprised of several key professionals.
